The VL Studio family originated from a lamp designed by architect Vilhelm Lauritzen for Radiohuset (The Radio House, the headquarters of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation) in Copenhagen in the 1940s. The name "Studio" was chosen because some of the lamps were used outside the studio to indicate - with a red or green light - whether the recording was in progress.

Louis Poulsen - VL Studio table/floor lamp brass

Louis Poulsen Lampada da Tavolo Terra VL Studio longho design palermoThe lamp emits glare-free diffuse light. The three-layer opal glass distributes the light very comfortably and radiates a pleasantly delicate glow to the surrounding environment. Vilhelm Lauritzen was the architect of Radiohuset, which was inaugurated in its functionalist design in 1945. The Radiohuset is a "work of art" like most buildings in Lauritzen which designed all the interior and every detail for the project.

Vilhelm Lauritzen

Vilhelm Theodor Lauritzen was one of Denmark's most important architects of his time and one of the originators of Danish modernism. Today, a number of his projects still stand as enduring examples of a then new and revolutionary architecture where form follows function. He was a passionate student of butterflies, but above all he was an architect who throughout his career insisted that architecture is applied art for the people – never a privilege for the few. Among Vilhelm Lauritzen's most famous and recognised works are the first terminal of Copenhagen Airport (1939), today known as the Vilhelm Lauritzen Terminal, the Radio House in Frederiksberg (1945), Vega – Folkets Hus in Copenhagen (1956) and the Danish Embassy in Washington (1960).
