Here is TOILETPAPER's plaque, proclaiming the end of Gufram, made of soft polyurethane foam.
Gufram - The End seat
We've come to the end of the line; Gufram is retiring from the design world and calling it quits on furniture. It declares this and turns over a new leaf with a tombstone.
In any case, no one has ever been able to understand the interior design company's mission. Everyone criticized the ambiguity of its recliners, which are not real sculptures because they ultimately retain their function, however latent. There were too many envious people who cursed the incomprehensibility of certain products that, after all, look like huge knick-knacks. And what about the host of whipping boys who always looked at it with suspicion and accused it of spreading the evil and blasphemous word of anti-design? It was time to say enough was enough. It was an unbearable stress for a brand like Gufram, which, through its pop icons, has always wanted to give anyone the chance to cultivate their imagination inside the home, creating pieces that are a little more original than usual with colorful, fresh, lively, ironic and fun pieces of furniture. So it was necessary to plan a final exit in a blaze of glory, calling to perform the funeral rite the ambiguous publishing, artistic, photographic (still hard to understand) project TOILETPAPER, composed of Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari. Here is TOILETPAPER's tombstone, proclaiming the end of Gufram. The end. As a last act of resistance, however, to be true to your beliefs, you can sit on Gufram's tombstone like a stool. Or you can throw it like a stone at those who have sinned, although in this case you will not hurt them because it is made of soft polyurethane foam and so well decorated as faux granite that you will not even notice it.
Toiletpaper
Born from the collaboration between the contemporary artist Maurizio Cattelan and the photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari, Toilet Paper is a magazine composed entirely of images created by the two artists with the idea of creating a new concept of relationship between artistic language and advertising language, art and fashion. Images with a vibrant ironic and provocative charge that combine the patina of commercial photography, pop and surrealist evocations, sexual obsessions, suggestions and ambiguities, creating complex orchestrations that laugh with a smile academicism and art criticism self-referential.
"Art and advertising are little girls who beg us to play with them. We are a lead soldier, we are a horse whipped, we are a doll to comb, we are a mud puddle."
Gufram
Gufram is an Interior Design Italian brand globally known for pushing the limits of industrial design. With its Radical Design spirit and its nonconformist experimentation linked to aesthetic, technological and material research, Gufram has created seats and interior design icons that have entered collective imagination: playful, subversive and desecrating products with a POP soul, willingly designed as anti-design items. Gufram was born in Turin as an artisanal entity, where the craftsmen specialized in upholstery, cabinet making and furniture padding met the artistic and international avant-garde with the goal to give birth to a new way of understanding modern furniture. Since 1966 Gufram has been producing design icons that have become unique in form and value thanks to the cross-contamination between the industrial design approach, the artisanal creation and the imaginative flair typical of art. Gufram's unmistakable furniture items like the couch Bocca, the chaise lounge Pratone and the hall tree Cactus (just to name a few), also known as Domestic Sculptures able to interpret the contact point between both the artistic and the design worlds, are now displayed in the most beautiful houses and in the most renowned museums in the world.
