Molteni - Palinfrasca outdoor armchair
Palinfrasca with its immediately recognisable iconic shape, pays tribute to the 1994 work by Luca Meda from which it takes its inspiration, interpreting the essence of teak not only in an unprecedented and contemporary way, but also in the most exhaustive representation of Molteni&C's savoir-faire and research into materials: a knowledge gained in the almost ninety years of the life of the company, founded in 1934.
The seats are rich in refined cabinet-making details, such as the profile cut into the connection between the end pillar of the structure and the back of the sofa, which serves as a convenient shelf for small objects. The solid wood pillar itself shows a soft, rounded profile and a double curvature in the corners that give the material a 'soft' image.
The gentle curves of the supportive frame, together with the silky smoothness of the wood, conjure up a general image of softness.
Another distinctive element of the Landmark Collection is the "weaving" of the thin backrest band, which recalls the weaves in natural materials of the Mediterranean tradition. There is a warp and weft motif on painted metal rods in a burnished colour, which, in a macro-scale design, lends an original and contemporary aesthetic. The backrest weave is available in teak or olive green EVA polyurethane, a pliable yet non-deformable plastic material with an appearance reminiscent of leather and salt- or weather-resistant characteristics suitable for outdoor furniture.
The sofa cushions are generous, giving an idea of abundance, softness and richness of materials. The seat cushion in moulded polyurethane with variable densities provides maximum support, for immersive comfort. The upholstery is in outdoor, draining and weather-resistant fabric. The covers are easily removable, despite the large dimensions.
Vincent Van Duysen
Vincent Van Duysen was born in 1962, in Lokeren, Belgium and graduated in architecture from the Higher Institute of Architecture Sint-Lucas, in Ghent. From 1986 to 1989 he worked in Milan and Brussels. He opened his own studio in Antwerp, in 1990 focusing on architecture and interior design. The relationship between interior design and architecture in his work is profound. Furnishings and accessories are designed with an architectural perspective that is not limited by form, but was expressed with a careful perception of interior space and its relationship to the exterior architecture. By interpreting architecture and redefining its proportions, Van Duysen creates objects of great purity and simplicity that still retain a concrete character and solid form.
During his career, Van Duysen has received multiple awards among which the Flemish Culture Prize for Design, Belgian Designer of the Year and the Henry van de Velde Lifetime Achievement Award, and an EDIDA for Best Interior Designer of the Year. In 2021, the Winery VV has also been appointed and shortlisted for the Mies Van Der Rohe Award. His name was also been included in the AD100 survey by the Architectural Digest network and Elle Decor A-List multiple times.
In 2016, Van Duysen was appointed as creative director of Italian brands Molteni&C and Dada, reshaping their global image by designing flagship stores, exhibition stands and a series of new products. From 2018 to May 2020, he covered the role of art director at Sahco for Kvadrat, after which he has been collaborating as a senior designer.
Molteni
Angelo Molteni, born in 1912, began his entrepreneurial activity in Giussano, now the province of Monza and Brianza, the furniture district. His workshop becomes, in a short time, synonymous with high quality product. The 60s began in the best way, in fact Angelo Molteni is in the founding committee of the first Salone del Mobile in Milan, which opened on 24 September 1961 with great success. This is the decade of the revolution: in a few months, the production is converted from classic to modern, to create well-designed furniture, designed for the series. Luca Meda, a student of the Ulm School, is the man of the revolution, his Iride containers presented at the Salone del Mobile in 1968. From the 70s until today, Molteni grows, is renewed and concretizes in a definitive way its value, and the undisputed style in the world panorama. In 2008 the distribution expanded beyond the Italian borders and was structured with foreign branches. New molteni&c | Dada monobrand stores are opening: about 600 in the world, including 40 Flagship Stores, also present in the largest international design metropolises such as London and New York. Moltenigroup.com is born, the web address of the new website of the Molteni Group. Key words are narration, inspiration, contemporaneity of molteni&c and Dada brands. As of April 2016, Belgian architect and designer Vincent Van Duysen has been appointed creative director of molteni&c and Dada. After the success of the Gliss Master wardrobe collection, the new collaboration focuses on image coordination and the retail concept.
