Vitra - Miniatures collection La Mamma

La Mamma (Donna) is completely in tune with the spirit of Pop Art and Gaetano Pasce’s predilection for anthropomorphic forms. The chair was designed to resemble a prehistoric figure of female fertility, with a ball attached to symbolize captivity. The unconventional nature of the form also applies to the construction and marketing of the chair which was one of a series of six.
For over two decades, the Vitra Design Museum has been producing miniature replicas of the furniture design milestones of its collection. The Miniatures Collection encompasses the entire history of industrial furniture design, moving from historicism and art nouveau to the Bauhaus and the new objectivity, from radical design and postmodernism to the present day. Exactly 1/6 the size of the historical originals, the chairs are all scaled and recreate with precision the smallest details of construction, material, color. The high standard of authenticity also extends to the natural grain of the wood, the reproduction of the vines and the elaborate artisanal techniques involved. This made miniatures popular collectibles, as well as artwork ideal for universities, design schools and architects.
