Vitra - Y-Chair miniature
Hans J. Wegner is one of the most prominent representatives of traditional Danish furniture design. Rooted in the family tradition of craftsmanship, Wegner's work draws on his extensive training as a carpenter. He had already learned to handle tools and three-dimensional forms as a child in his father's shoe shop and, during his studies in Copenhagen, he met the masters of the Danish art of furniture making. Wegner drew inspiration from carpentry from around the world, interpreting it in a typically Danish way.
The designs for his Y-Chair come from China. The Y-shaped backrest evokes the natural fork of a branch. The woven seat recalls the tall grass along the narrow banks of the Danish landscape and follows the northwestern European tradition of functional chairs.
