VITRA

Vitra is a Swiss company that produces furniture and interior design. Known for producing the works of important designers and architects.

The headquarters are located in Weil am Rhein, Germany, where the famous Vitra Design Museum is also located.

This story starts in the post-war years, when two Americans, both architects, Charles and Ray Eames, decided to help a furniture dealer.

The collaboration led them to design and then produce masterpieces for interior design, which are still very current today.

The story

In 1950,  Willi Fehlbaum, a German carpenter living a few miles across the German border, ran a modest furniture store in Basel.

His idea was to make and sell quality interior design complements, using only innovative materials such as plastic, glass and bakelite, replacing them with more traditional wood.

Unfortunately, this project did not match the economic resources and materials at its disposal at the time.

It was for this reason that Mr Fehelbaum decided to turn to two architects who had already shown great talent in America since the thirties and who had gained a solid reputation among the operators of the interior design industry.

The two interior designers, united in both married and working life, started their own projects in the studio property in Minneapolis and soon found themselves involved in the whirlwind of ideas and enthusiasm of Mr Willi Fehlbaum, whose intuition to involve them involved a significant and radical turning point for his career and for life.
