Vitra - Amoebe Highback Armchair

Amoebe was designed in 1970 by Verner Panton for his famous Visiona installation, which included various versions of this living room element. This original seat with an elongated backrest embodies the exuberant spirit of the early 70’s. Thanks to its padded surfaces and flexible shell, Amoebe is even more comfortable.

Verner Panton

Verner Panton's passion for bright colors and geometric patterns manifested itself in a wide range of textile designs. By fusing the elements of a room into an overall work of art (Gesamtkunstwerk).Panton's interior installations have achieved legendary status. The most famous examples are the "Visiona" ship installations for the Cologne furniture fair (1968 and 1970), the Spiegel editorial headquarters in Hamburg (1969), and the Varna restaurant in Aarhus (1970).Designer Verner Panton's goal was to make a chair that gave the idea of growing up out of the floor, that is, a chair transformed into something "more natural and organic, which never has four legs." From this, the Panton Chair takes up what is characteristic of Art Nouveau, namely, being directly inspired by nature. Indeed, thanks to its form, the Panton Chair is designed to follow the curves of the human body.
