Architect, artist and engineer, Santiago Calatrava was born in 1951 in Valencia (Spain). He attended primary and secondary school in Valencia and he also attended the School of Arts and Crafts, where he began his formal education in drawing and painting. Upon completing high school in Valencia and following period spent in Paris, he enrolled at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura in Valencia, where he graduated in Architecture and took a post-graduate course in Urbanism, followed by post-graduate studies in Civil Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. After completing your studies he took on small engineering commissions, but he also began to participate in competitions, with his first winning proposal in 1983 for the design and construction of the Stadelhofen Railway Station in Zurich. In 1984 Calatrava designed the Bach de Roda bridge in Barcelona. This was the first of the bridge projects that helped create its international reputation.
